Playing dress-up

Since I literally bought an entire new wardrobe when I was back in the Bay Area, I figure I should show you a lil' of what I got. Here's the first installation:

Vintage St. John (!!!) sheer ruffle blouse, second-hand lace bodysuit, vintage floral pencil skirt, AKIRA lace-up booties, second-hand "Navajo" cuff bracelet, second-hand necklace.

Sorry for the boob-age and the lame background. It's my first time posting a photo of what I'm wearing! I'll be more energetic next time.

Resolutions for 2009

This is my favorite New Year's resolution thus far:

"Our New Year's resolution is 300 dpi—last year was 72." -Dan Single and George Gorrw of Ksubi

Ha! I'm not that creative but here's what I got so far:

1. Get to work EVERYDAY before 10am
2. Buy more local
3. Eat less candy and other sweets
4. Update my blog and LJ more frequently

Nasty Wedges

I don't know if you remember but when my blog first started, I was hatin' on vintage clothing ebay stores including Nasty Gal. Since then, Nasty Gal has started their own online store which still has overpriced vintage clothing, but alas, some of the stuff looks AMAZING so I have to cave-in and say that their merchandise can be reasonably priced at times. Plus, I kinda like the idea of an online vintage clothing store that has nothing to do with ebay. If you want that shit, you can just buy it! Unfortunately, the nasty goods sell like hot cakes so you gotta be on top of your game and check the website daily. I wanted these SOOO BADDD, but they were already sold when I checked the website:

Oh well. I LOVE these shoes even more:

Lulu Chang (methinks she sorta has the American Susie Bubble blog going on) wearing some hot shit! This photo was taken from the Nasty Gal Blog.

I'm DETERMINED to find vintage red wedges when I'm out here in the Bay Area.

Speaking of "nasty" clothes, I'm diggin the Black Oak Arkansas attire (or lack of) in their live performance of "Hot and Nasty". Check it out!

BTW, I'm currently on a classic rock binge.

Radiation Safety Training

While typing up my Top Ten MP3s list, I was pretending to do my online radiation safety training. I found this interesting piece of information that I'd like to share with you all:

No. of Days your life expectancy will be decreased / Hazard
3500 days / Being unmarried male
1600 days / Being unmarried female
500 days / Being 20% overweight
210 days / Increase food intake 100 cal/day
130 days / Alcohol (US average)
41 days / Drowning
40 days / Job with radiation exposure of 500 mrem/year

Conclusion: A job with radiation exposure is not hazardous. Second conclusion: Don't be an unmarried male.

Fishythree's Top Ten MP3s of 2008

Broadzilla James (apparently an avid reader of my blog?!) suggested that I get into the holiday spirit and make a music-related Top Ten list. I suppose the saying, "monkey see, monkey do" applies here. Unfortunately, I couldn't make a Top Ten Albums list because I mainly buy 12"s (:P). And seeing how it'd take too much of my time and effort to comprise a fair Top Ten Songs list, here instead is a list of of my Top Ten MP3s of 2008 (Please note that I haphazardly made this list in <10 minutes while looking through my iTunes):

1. Hercules and Love Affair – Blind: Duh! What a great jam! The Hercules and Love Affair album would be #1 on my Top Ten Albums of 2008 list if I had one.

2. The Juan Maclean – Happy House: Another no-brainer!

3. Deerhunter – Nothing Ever Happened: I don't know why, but even after listening to this song so many times, it's still just as catchy. Teehee, I love this album too!

4. Cut Copy – Hearts on Fire: I'm pretty sick of Cut Copy and I didn't like their performance when I saw them earlier this year, but hey, this was THE 2008 jam.

5. Lil Wayne featuring Bobby Valentino – Mrs. Officer: I have no shame when it comes to including this Top 40 jam on my list. The entire Lil Wayne album is solid, btw.

6. Franki Valli and the Four Seasons – Beggin’ (Pilooski Edit): Aww, a total summer 2008 jam. I have Broadzilla James to thank for telling me the details of this song. Who would have thought to edit this kind of song for the blog-house-o-sphere? Btw, Pilooski also made an edit of Elvis - Crayfish which is soooo amazing! I suppose I should have included a Todd Terje edit in this list but there's only room for one "editor" and Pilooski prevails. LOL, I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVE THIS EDIT ON VINYL! 12/22/08 edit: Kyle Miller told me that this song came out late 2007? OH WELL!

7. Watussi – If All We Had Was Love: Stickydisc records is the JAM. The other side of this 12" is also really good, but I don't have that MP3. Babytalk (side project of Hercules and Love Affair) also has a 12" on Stickydisc and it's pretty darn awesome, too. I might have included that song over the Watussi song, but having two Hercules and Love Affair songs on this Top Ten list wouldn't be fair or interesting.

8. Solange – I Decided: Okay, I am a little embarrassed for listing this song, but you know what, I like it, and I like the idea of contemporary pop singers with a "Motown"-vibe. Everything is making a comeback these days anyway, right?

9. Crystal Castles - Courtship Dating: Anyone remember Crystal Castles? Yeah, their LP came out in 2008. Weird to think that it was just a few months ago. Back then, I was a little disappointed by the LP because most of the songs on there were released on 7" already and the ones that weren't previously released pretty much sucked. This is probably the only song that didn't.

10. Panthers – Goblin (Holy Ghost! Remix): Truth be told, I had a lot of songs that could have possibly been #10. The reason why this song wins is because I'm not really a fan of Panthers or Holy Ghost! and yet they managed to make something AMAZING that I can listen to over and over again.

Ooo la la

Recently the NY times had a little article on black lacey tights being THE fashionable accessory for this fall/winter season. BIG SURPRISE. Anyway, they actually had some nice shots of some super sexy tights so you should check out at least the slide show here. Like Susie Bubble, these are my fav:

So sexy!!!

They're by Wolford, which is honestly the best brand of tights ever made. They're pricey but you definitely get what you pay for. St. Vincent said the best thing about Wolford tights, "They're like America. They never fucking run." OHHH snap! But so very true.

It's time for my monthly jam. Enjoy this one hit wonder that includes a racist & homophobic lyric:

The Impossible Hot

What would a real blog be without mentioning the current "It girl" Zooey Deschanel? I stumbled across this portrait of her and it's CRAZY HOT:

I guess I'm a sucker for nice boobs. That is all, carry on.

Another Life

I meant to talk about this a long time ago, but seeing how my blog died, I never got the chance. Lucky for me, my blog has been resurrected and it is now more appropriate to mention this Second Lives exhibit going on at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City. The exhibit is pretty self-explanatory so I won't say anymore. Some of the stuff looks lame, but here are two pieces I find pretty cool:

If you're in the area, you should go check it out. If you're in Philadelphia and plan to go, take me with you. The exhibit ends February 19th, 2009.

Oh what the hey... time for post #3

Click the link below so you'll understand why I posted this photo.

It's Friday and I have an hour to kill at work. Remember when I used to post a disco song each month? Remember how that died off really fast? Remember how my blog was dead and now I'm trying to resurrect my blog by posting tons and tons of entries? Ha, well I finally found a disco song that I can't stop listening to thanks to a mix by Mike Simonetti aka the dude from Troubleman Records/Italians Do It Better. It's called "Just Love What You're Doing" by Hot Chocolate and upon reading the post over again, I realize it's actually one of Mike Simonetti's favorite disco track of all time. Ha, go figure. I couldn't find the Youtube video so you'll just have to download the mix on the Italians Do It Better blog. The song starts around 38:13ish, but since the transition is so f*ing good, I suggest you tune in a few minutes earlier.
Hey, The Impossible Cool is my new favorite blog. It's minimal, pleasing to the eye, and pretty darn cool (duh). My only complaint is that there's not enough cool women on there. Oh well... Anyway, check out some of my fav portraits thus far:

No fair, rock stars always get the nicest boobs.

Speaking of nice boobs...

Uh, I had to do a double take! I never knew Michael Caine was a stone cold fox.

I'm ashamed to be raised in CA.

Please watch this video. It's very touching commentary on Prop. 8 by Keith Olbermann:

I'm obsessed with knitting!

If the earlier post about Yokoo wasn't a dead giveaway, I'm starting to obsess over crazy knits. Check this out:

From Sandra Backlund's current collection Last Breath Bruises

Ahh, all of her stuff is so amazing! I need to really get into the groove of knitting. Recently, I just figured out how to make cable knits. Yay me.

Everyone and his/her mom are in love with Yokoo! Yay for kooky-big-over-the-top scarves! Check out Yokoo's Etsy shop.

This week, I feel like these socks.

I'm not a big fan of spreads with AA gear, but what the hey... I'm feelin' the socks on this lady.

stimulus

Yeah, yeah, my blog is dead. I realized it's too much work to sit down and write a thoughtful blog entry on a normal basis. Maybe just posting three pictures of things I find interesting per entry will stimulate my blog. It's pretty minimal, but this will just have to do for now.

without a watch

Starting in late August, I decided to ditch my faithful gold-plated Casio digital watch. Within a few days, I realized how dependent I was at looking at my watch to tell time and keeping track of experiments. Then I started depending on my cell phone. Then my cell phone broke so that cycle broke. Then I got a temporary phone which sucks so it's a good balance. Anyway, I kinda want this because it actually might be useful (image via Seven New York):

Ha! Just kidding... okay not really. Jeremy Scott's stuff always cracks me up. However, I do genuinely wish I could buy this dress. I have a clock-print bomber jacket that would be awesome overkill.

diamonds and candy

I'm ALMOST done with science camp. I wrote a blog entry on our bus ride back to Illinois last week. It's outdated and I never got a chance to find all the images I was planning to put in this entry. Anyway, I figure I should still post what I have already written considering I worked so "hard" on it.

3 October 2008:
For the past week and a half, I’ve been participating in a graduate school-level “science camp” out in the heartland of America. I’m only halfway through the course, but my belly and brain are already filled to the max with sugar and advanced physics respectively. Maybe I just haven’t been getting enough sleep or I’m actually going crazy, but some of the featured collections from Paris Fashion Week S/S09 have started to resemble things that I’ve been consumed with. Take a look (all photos provided by style.com):

I spy cotton candy and neutron reflecting mirrors in Comme des Garcons Spring '09.

I spy reciprocal lattices, interference wave patterns, and Bragg peaks in Dries Van Noten Spring '09.

I spy one half of a high pressure diamond anvil from Maison Martin Margiela Spring '09.

I think I might be losing my mind. :P

for those that are not London-bound

I think every other blog post I make is about how much I'd like to be in London right now. Well, here's another! I'm sure you've all heard by now about the "House of Viktor & Rolf" exhibition at London's Barbican Art Gallery. If not, where have you been? Just kidding! I'm not on the Internet to make anyone feel bad. Anyway, for those of you not reading any blogs except for mine (aww shucks), the Dutch fashion design duo Viktor & Rolf take over the Barbican to present fifteen years of their stunning work.

The exhibit features a specially constructed giant doll house that holds fifty 19th century porcelain dolls dressed in miniature replicas of the designers' signature pieces.

Today, I stumbled across a blog post from If it's Hip, It's Here that displays most of these dolls side by side with photos of their full-sized versions on the runway. Here are some of my favorites:

From the Atomic Bomb Collection (1998-99)

Bedtime Story Collection (2005-06)

From the Silver Collection (2006-07)

From the Fashion Show Collection (2007-08)

For those that will never get a chance to see this exhibit, check out the rest of the post here.

Being the weird flickr stalker that I am, I also discovered a flickr set that documents the making of the Barbican exhibition:

From growin'Up's flickr. Check out the rest of the set here.

If you are wandering aimlessly around London up to September 21st, go see the exhibit! Event details can be found here.

fashion x olympics

How blogger of me to have caught the Olympic-fever of Summer 2008. To spare you of your sanity, I will only write one sentence: the Chinese high-end department store chain, Lane Crawford, commissioned 12 fashion designers to make Olympian uniforms. (If you'd like more details, click the image below.)

OUCHIE WOWCHIE

Today, I came across a Myspace bulletin from Myspace friend WOWCH that was seriously funny (hayyy, it's an oxymoron!). For those that don't know, WOWCH makes t-shirts --funny ones. And no, these shirts are not "McCain is Insane"-funny; they're more like a-dragon-wearing-high-tops-standing-on-a-pile-of-gold-doubloons-funny. How is that funny you say? Well, I own that shirt, so it's funny!!! ANYWAY, prior to reading the Myspace bulletin, I was expecting some haphazardly-made ironic flier advertising one of WOWCH's DJ gigs. To my surprise, WOWCH was hating on the Pineapple Express movie:

OUCH, right? Apparently in 2005, Urban Outfitters sold t-shirts with this original WOWCH design:

This image is titled "fuckjamesfranco.jpg", btw.

Three years later, James Franco's Pineapple Express character is sporting a shirt with a strikingly similar design:

Oh, but clearly, the cat is orange so it's completely different. Ha! WOWCH begs to differ. In fact, he decided to write one of my favorite types of blog entries --a hateful ranting one. Go read it here . If not, at least read my favorite quote from the entry,"But hey ya know maybe James Franco got it wrong, like about 90% of his career choices since Freaks & Geeks." Double ouch. Wow, what did Mr. Franco ever do to WOWCH? To top things off, WOWCH is trying to squeeze some money out of the movie by resurrecting the 2005 design. Buy the shirt here in a color that is similar to the one in Pineapple Express. Awww, it's pretty cute to see someone so riled up over this. Mimicry is the highest form of flattery, duh.

disco blah song of blah month

Yes MOM, this blog is slowly dying. I'm aware that it needs a brainstorm, STAT! Anyway, I know you've been waiting ALL MONTH for the next exciting disco song that I'm jamming on. This is one of my most favorite songs; I most likely have talked to you about it, but in case you were snoozing like my blog, here it is again:

Don Armando and the 2nd Avenue Band - "Deputy of Love"

I just saw the 12" of this at Sweet Jane Vintage and Records for only 5 bucks! I think I might have paid over double for that so get on it if it's still there, suckas! Even if you're not interested in the song, you should still check out that store out 'cause I'm tired of being their only best customer! : P

Okay, I'll admit it: I didn't really put much effort into choosing a song for August. To make it up to you, look what I stumbled upon while cruising YouTube:

Stacey Q - "Two of Hearts"

Ha! I tricked you. This is an 80s jam! You know you love it though. The Brooklyn based duo Purple Crush does a pretty good cover of the song. You have to check them out because they sound like Peaches but for the music blog. Awww, remember Peaches? Okay, back to (-_-)oO(zzzzz)!!!

catching up with the Guilty Pleasure

NOTE: I KNOWWW. I already made a post about something I found on the Turntable Lab Blog a few months ago. Well, what do you expect? I'm trying my best to cure prostate cancer; that doesn't leave much time for anything else besides reading that blog. Give a girl a break, okay?

From the Institubes blog on RCRD LBL. Go check it out!

Awww Institubes -one of my favorite big-time French electro labels that hasn't bored me yet. I spotted this interview of Jean-René Etienne (head of Institubes) from the TTL blog. I enjoyed this quote from Mr. Institubes:

"What are your feelings on [...] the whole "blog-house" hype?

Now, "blog-house", I don't really know what that is, but in LA I went to this house and there was some scruffy girl passed out half-naked in the bedroom, in the living-room people played Rock Band like their life depended on it, and you had some CDJs lying around, and on the fridge, next to a picture of Shawty Lo pasted on Pedro Winter's body, there was this sign: WELCOME TO THE BLOG HOUSE.

Come on, that's funny. Oh man, now I can't stop reminiscing about last summer's Institubes party. Damn, that shit was good. AND Para One took a picture of me dancing like a crazy mother and posted it on his Myspace. Bitches, I'm famous.

Speaking of reminiscing, the TTL blog can't stop talking about Hollertronix. It's times like these when I wish I was actually 10-15 years older and living on the East Coast. Can you imagine going to all those amazing parties and DJ nights that people are STILL TRYING TO EMULATE? I sure as hell can't; I was in my mother's womb all the way out on the boring-ass "Wesside". On second thought, even if I was born a decade ago and living somewhere like New York, I probably would have missed it because I'm a fucking lame nerd at heart. That shit is timeless.

Disco Song of the Month

I'm officially starting a new monthly post: "Disco Song of the Month". It's pretty self-explanatory and it'll ensure that I write one post per month. Here's June's song:

I love how Ms. LaSalle's pose is so slimming.

I also love how only a middle-aged woman like Denise LaSalle could sing a song like this. Muahahaha. Enjoy.

"finding love"

Yesterday, I went with Bird Hunter to see "Sex in the City" the movie. It was cheesy, but in a good way. I realized that sometimes watching movies with an entire crowd can be fun. The best part is that my wardrobe is now totally inspired.

Today, Kyle Gorman brought this to my attention. I thought it was relevant to the movie and my love life (or lack thereof):

Introducing Elle Rex

Sorry for the lack of blogging! Just when I thought I was done with Stress, I get bombarded with with TOO. MUCH. WORK. Anyway, to keep yourselves occupied, I'll link you to the love-of-my-life's new hobby: party photography. I'm so proud of Lauren for being gutsy enough to go out with her crazy new camera and take photos of complete strangers in dark creepy corners. Gee whiz, your enthusiasm is overwhelming... Honestly, I am very impressed by the first two sets so you should take a look.

graduation time

I've been bedridden for the past two days, but fear not; diseases can't keep me away from the computer or blogging. The following topic was brought to my attention by Brandon Olsen, who is not only super talented, but is also one of the few truly good people that my life has been blessed with. This is one of the photos I took of Brandon's art from last winter:

I'm only posting this picture because I think it's pretty good considering I'm not a photographer. (Yes, I'm that vain.) Just to mention, although Brandon is an MFA student at CCA, his work won't be up until next spring. Anyway, this is all besides the point of this blog post...

The California College of Arts Graduate Program in Fine Arts is having an exhibition featuring their 2008 MFA graduates.
