Knock Out cosmetics makes a line of matte nail polish that is literally a knockout. I just bought some over the holidays and I'm totally amazed. I don't know what they put in it, but it is super chip resistant. Take it from a person who doesn't wear gloves in a research laboratory: this works!

Sorry for laggin' on the bloggin'. I've actually got a couple of excuses: (1) I've been sick all week and currently have hearing loss, (2) my desktop computer that I just resurrected is once again not booting up anymore, and (3) Twittering is my new time-suck. Anyway, despite all the interesting Fashion Week stuff I've been hearing about on Twitter, I'm uber-uninspired to post anything. I'll just stick to talking about the Philadelphia weather like the previous post! Ahhh. Winter is in full-force. This was the view right outside my lab last night. Just looking at the photo makes me shiver. : ) Due to the formidable weather, my social life has been somewhat on a hiatus, which is great for my wallet, body, and mind. When I spend this much time alone in my cozy apartment, I start getting crafty. In fact, earlier this week, I turned a Hanes t-shirt into a shredded mess of a arm-spat (I'm still working on the one for my right hand). Also, yesterday I turned some retired J Brand jeans into a denim scarf (I know, it's kinda bizarre!). Here are both of my DIY projects together:

I just busted out the scarf today and it's doing a swell job of keeping my neck warm. Hopefully the weather will maintain so that I can finish up some grander undertakings (i.e. knit an over-sized scarf).

First, if you haven't noticed, my blog got a new look. Considering I have close to zero html skillz, this is a huge accomplishment. Yayyyy! Second, I know it's not that time of the month yet, but hey, my blog just got a makeover; I can afford to sneak in an extra disco song or two. One of my favorite disco songs of all time is Loose Joints - Is It All Over My Face. There are actually two versions: either with female or male vocals --double the fun, right?

Something new, something red

I’m a day late, but happy Chinese new year! I’m actually appalled that Google didn’t have a Chinese New Year-themed logo this year. *shrugs* Maybe the economic climate has forced the company to cut back on frivolous one-day designs? Anyway, it’s tradition to wear something new on the first day of the Chinese New Year along with some red --though I suppose the best outfit would contain something new and red. So keeping the promise that I’d take more pictures of my outfits, I figure I could show you the new shoes I got. (I apologize for the plainness of my outfit for such a special occasion.)

My enthusiasm is overwhelming... but really, I loveeee these boots. They are EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for --boots with a wooden heel and a combat boot-y feel to them. Not to mention, they are of higher quality than one would expect from Steve Madden shoes.

I think I’ll go ahead and make a Chinese New Year’s resolution of trying to wear heels more.

For the past few weeks, I've been admiring the current dark lipstick fad. Though I do love the vampy look from YSL...

...being the modest girl that I am, I prefer the Derek Lam's more reserved take on the same trend:

Nonetheless, I've been trying to get my hands on this super vogue black YSL lip gloss:
Though I could never pull off looking like a YSL vampire, customer reviews were saying that the lip gloss was as subtle or extreme as one wanted it to be. I was sold. Alas, when I finally decided to fork over the $28 on Barneys.com (they were offering free shipping), they canceled my order because the lip gloss was sold out. How rude! Oh well, I guess it just wasn't meant to be. Apparently it's sold out EVERYWHERE except ebay --no thanks.

I didn't give up though! I was having some "me-time" this weekend and came up with the idea to recession-proof this makeup trend with the help of my black and purple eyeliners. (To be exact, I blended NARS "Jungle Red" lipstick + Estee Lauder black eyeliner + Sephora lilac eyeliner + un-tinted lip gloss). Crazy, I know; I'm actually a little embarrassed about it even though I shouldn't be; these are hard economic times! Anyway, my lips came out kinda blotchy, but hey, (a) I forgot to apply lip primer first and (b) I didn't spend an extra cent! I'm pretty stoked with the results. See for yourself:

What would I do for longer lashes?

I just stumbled across an article in the NY Times Health section (my favorite section) and I couldn't resist blogging about it --even when I'm in the middle of frantically writing a grant that is due this Friday! AHHH! Anyway, the article mentioned how these eye drops used to treat glaucoma has been serendipitously found to make eyelashes longer and fuller! In fact, the drug has already been shown to work in a clinical trial and is now FDA approved to "improve" eyelashes. OMG! Usually, I don't care for these crazy cosmetic enhancements, but if there's one thing I could change about myself it's the length of my eyelashes. Seriously, I own at least five different mascaras and all of them don't really work because I don't have eyelashes to begin with! Moreover, applying false eyelashes are THE HARDEST THING for me to do. I'm so stoked. I am honestly considering this medication when it comes out on the market.

I recently watched the movie "Barbarella" and though I was not impressed by the storyline, I was quite fond of Jane Fonda's ever-changing exotic wardrobe:

Hmmph! According to Photobucket, the original picture I posted was too explicit, so this new picture will have to do. This costume is pretty hot as well, but alas, it kinda reminds me of Peter Pan. Though, I do dig the jewelry.

Of course I have to mention that Barbarella's big hair is AMAZING in the movie even after she has future-sex (you'll have to see the movie if you don't know what I'm talking about).

Speaking of Jane Fonda's hair, I just remembered that Erin (friend and hairstylist) told me that one of her clients once brought in a picture of Jane Fonda's mugshot and asked her to cut her hair exactly that way. Of course I had to google the photo up:

Happy new year! Oye, I've broken two of my new year's resolutions already: I've been getting into work at around 12-1pm and I've been eating one candy bar per day. Fortunately, I am still buying more local and I'm really trying to update my LJ and blog more. So I'm even. Cheers to the first post of the year!

Even though New Year's Eve is always totally overrated, Shaun told me that if I stayed at home, I might as well commit social suicide. Fair enough. I put on my best dress and the gaudiest pair of earrings I own:

I don't know if you remember but when my blog first started, I was hatin' on vintage clothing ebay stores including Nasty Gal. Since then, Nasty Gal has started their own online store which still has overpriced vintage clothing, but alas, some of the stuff looks AMAZING so I have to cave-in and say that their merchandise can be reasonably priced at times. Plus, I kinda like the idea of an online vintage clothing store that has nothing to do with ebay. If you want that shit, you can just buy it! Unfortunately, the nasty goods sell like hot cakes so you gotta be on top of your game and check the website daily. I wanted these SOOO BADDD, but they were already sold when I checked the website:

Broadzilla James (apparently an avid reader of my blog?!) suggested that I get into the holiday spirit and make a music-related Top Ten list. I suppose the saying, "monkey see, monkey do" applies here. Unfortunately, I couldn't make a Top Ten Albums list because I mainly buy 12"s (:P). And seeing how it'd take too much of my time and effort to comprise a fair Top Ten Songs list, here instead is a list of of my Top Ten MP3s of 2008 (Please note that I haphazardly made this list in <10 minutes while looking through my iTunes):

1. Hercules and Love Affair – Blind: Duh! What a great jam! The Hercules and Love Affair album would be #1 on my Top Ten Albums of 2008 list if I had one.

2. The Juan Maclean – Happy House: Another no-brainer!

3. Deerhunter – Nothing Ever Happened: I don't know why, but even after listening to this song so many times, it's still just as catchy. Teehee, I love this album too!

4. Cut Copy – Hearts on Fire: I'm pretty sick of Cut Copy and I didn't like their performance when I saw them earlier this year, but hey, this was THE 2008 jam.

5. Lil Wayne featuring Bobby Valentino – Mrs. Officer: I have no shame when it comes to including this Top 40 jam on my list. The entire Lil Wayne album is solid, btw.

6. Franki Valli and the Four Seasons – Beggin’ (Pilooski Edit): Aww, a total summer 2008 jam. I have Broadzilla James to thank for telling me the details of this song. Who would have thought to edit this kind of song for the blog-house-o-sphere? Btw, Pilooski also made an edit of Elvis - Crayfish which is soooo amazing! I suppose I should have included a Todd Terje edit in this list but there's only room for one "editor" and Pilooski prevails. LOL, I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVE THIS EDIT ON VINYL! 12/22/08 edit: Kyle Miller told me that this song came out late 2007? OH WELL!

7. Watussi – If All We Had Was Love: Stickydisc records is the JAM. The other side of this 12" is also really good, but I don't have that MP3. Babytalk (side project of Hercules and Love Affair) also has a 12" on Stickydisc and it's pretty darn awesome, too. I might have included that song over the Watussi song, but having two Hercules and Love Affair songs on this Top Ten list wouldn't be fair or interesting.

8. Solange – I Decided: Okay, I am a little embarrassed for listing this song, but you know what, I like it, and I like the idea of contemporary pop singers with a "Motown"-vibe. Everything is making a comeback these days anyway, right?

9. Crystal Castles - Courtship Dating: Anyone remember Crystal Castles? Yeah, their LP came out in 2008. Weird to think that it was just a few months ago. Back then, I was a little disappointed by the LP because most of the songs on there were released on 7" already and the ones that weren't previously released pretty much sucked. This is probably the only song that didn't.

10. Panthers – Goblin (Holy Ghost! Remix): Truth be told, I had a lot of songs that could have possibly been #10. The reason why this song wins is because I'm not really a fan of Panthers or Holy Ghost! and yet they managed to make something AMAZING that I can listen to over and over again.

Lucky for me, my blog has been resurrected and it is now more appropriate to mention this Second Lives exhibit going on at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City. The exhibit is pretty self-explanatory so I won't say anymore. Some of the stuff looks lame, but here are two pieces I find pretty cool:

Ha, well I finally found a disco song that I can't stop listening to thanks to a mix by Mike Simonetti aka the dude from Troubleman Records/Italians Do It Better. It's called "Just Love What You're Doing" by Hot Chocolate and upon reading the post over again, I realize it's actually one of Mike Simonetti's favorite disco track of all time. Ha, go figure. I couldn't find the Youtube video so you'll just have to download the mix on the Italians Do It Better blog. Within a few days, I realized how dependent I was at looking at my watch to tell time and keeping track of experiments. Then I started depending on my cell phone. Then my cell phone broke so that cycle broke. Then I got a temporary phone which sucks so it's a good balance. For the past week and a half, I’ve been participating in a graduate school-level “science camp” out in the heartland of America. I’m only halfway through the course, but my belly and brain are already filled to the max with sugar and advanced physics respectively. Maybe I just haven’t been getting enough sleep or I’m actually going crazy, but some of the featured collections from Paris Fashion Week S/S09 have started to resemble things that I’ve been consumed with. I think every other blog post I make is about how much I'd like to be in London right now. Well, here's another! I'm sure you've all heard by now about the "House of Viktor & Rolf" exhibition at London's Barbican Art Gallery. If not, where have you been? Just kidding! I'm not on the Internet to make anyone feel bad. Anyway, for those of you not reading any blogs except for mine (aww shucks), the Dutch fashion design duo Viktor & Rolf take over the Barbican to present fifteen years of their stunning work.

The exhibit features a specially constructed giant doll house that holds fifty 19th century porcelain dolls dressed in miniature replicas of the designers' signature pieces.

Today, I stumbled across a blog post from If it's Hip, It's Here that displays most of these dolls side by side with photos of their full-sized versions on the runway. Here are some of my favorites:

Today, I came across a Myspace bulletin from Myspace friend WOWCH that was seriously funny (hayyy, it's an oxymoron!). For those that don't know, WOWCH makes t-shirts --funny ones. And no, these shirts are not "McCain is Insane"-funny; they're more like a-dragon-wearing-high-tops-standing-on-a-pile-of-gold-doubloons-funny. How is that funny you say? Well, I own that shirt, so it's funny!!! ANYWAY, prior to reading the Myspace bulletin, I was expecting some haphazardly-made ironic flier advertising one of WOWCH's DJ gigs. To my surprise, WOWCH was hating on the Pineapple Express movie:

OUCH, right? Apparently in 2005, Urban Outfitters sold t-shirts with this original WOWCH design:

Oh, but clearly, the cat is orange so it's completely different. Ha! WOWCH begs to differ. In fact, he decided to write one of my favorite types of blog entries --a hateful ranting one. Go read it here . If not, at least read my favorite quote from the entry,"But hey ya know maybe James Franco got it wrong, like about 90% of his career choices since Freaks & Geeks." Double ouch. Wow, what did Mr. Franco ever do to WOWCH? To top things off, WOWCH is trying to squeeze some money out of the movie by resurrecting the 2005 design. Buy the shirt here in a color that is similar to the one in Pineapple Express. Awww, it's pretty cute to see someone so riled up over this. Mimicry is the highest form of flattery, duh.

Shhh, you have to promise to keep this post on the d/l because my love for DJs is a little creepy. Anyway, as some of you may already know, Turntable Lab has pretty much ruined my life. Every month, my life savings goes to that damned store. Not to mention, I spend way too much of my time browsing the Turntable Lab website and reading the Turntable Lab Blog a.k.a. My Guilty Pleasure. All the blog contributors are Turntable Lab employees by day and DJs by night, including Michna, who I've come to adore only for the mere fact that I LOVE his blog posts. For some odd reason I can always tell which entries are written by him; I guess I'm just that into him. What a total babe:

The last time I was up in NYC (October 2007) I saw him at a party and he was dressed in all white --like an angel. I totally swooned, but SHAUN wanted to leave before I got a chance to hear his set. Today, as I was getting my daily dose of TTL Estoy Con Estupido, I found out that Michna just got signed to Ghostly International, which is crazy awesome news. Moreover, Michna's "Triple Chrome Dipped" is the first track on Ghostly International x Adult Swim's newly released compilation. It's so good (especially the last 41 seconds). There's even a super cute animated video that goes along with the song. You can watch the video and listen to/download the whole album here. I'm really diggin' the entire comp so go check it out!

ebay bashing

This is a ranting entry, so if you can't handle it, move on to the next post. : P. Anyway, every time I check out vintage clothes on Ebay, I always get really ticked. The amount of money people are willing to spend on shitty thrifted clothing is obscene. Take these few examples:

1. From Lullie Vintage:

This $86 dress is ugly as fuck. The model ain't all that either. Plus, the dress is UNHEMMED meaning it was waaay uglier before and that's why you didn't even bother picking it out when you saw it for $1.99 at the Goodwill.

2. From Maki Maki Vintage:

Whoever came up with this print was trying too hard to make it look like an animal print without it being an animal print. It's so unpleasing to the eye! You and I both know that this dress sucks and so does spending $93 for it.

3. From Nasty Gal Vintage:

Ummm, why would one spend $71 for a crappy skirt when one can get a similar skirt of similar/better quality from H&M for $5? It's not even a designer brand! Ugh, how this bothers me so! Oh, and is it just me, or is the model's outfit ALL WRONG?

4. Also from Nasty Gal Vintage:

This one definitely takes the cake. Whoever ends up paying $112+ for this "dress" is an IDIOT. It's a fucking ugly-ass night gown that was donated because the woman who wore it could not seduce her husband with it and subsequently had to get a divorce. Perhaps the dress worn in combination with the $71 blue skirt (as modeled in the photo) will give better results.

Yeah, yeah, I'm a total hater. The girls are super bangin' and obviously people are putting down a lot of money partially due to the sexy photos. I can only hope these suckers will buy my stuff too when I start selling clothes on Ebay again.

Is anyone else having a love/hate relationship with Chloe Sevigny? I only ask this because she's been EVERYWHERE recently (at least in my sad, little world). She was on the cover of last month's Nylon magazine and is conveniently one of the new faces for the Chloe fragrance:

Am I missing something? Sevigny is just as dead ugly as this candid(?) photo of her watching a tennis match:

She appears to be on the heavier side in real life, which, thinking it over again, makes me glad that she's actually deemed a model. I'll also give her plus points because I too am a fan of stuffing my face with popcorn (case in point: I bought two bags of popcorn at Trader Joe's a few days ago). As Michael hinted, there's just something ephemerally sexy about Chloe. Maybe you will find this photo of her and ex-lover Harmony Korine (director of "Gummo") as charming as I did:

Besides looking pretty, I guess Chloe has plenty of other things going for her. For one, she babysat Topher Grace (aka Eric Forman on "That 70s Show") [1]. Also, her brother Paul Sevigny is the owner of the exclusively hipster NYC bar, Beatrice Inn [2]. Okay but seriously, she's actually quite the impressive actress. I'll admit, I really liked her in Larry Clark's "Kids". Oh yeah, and who could forget that she got the chance to suck Vincent Gallo's big, fat penis in "Brown Bunny"? Unlike somebody who will remain nameless, I will spare you that image.

I really want to go back to London RIGHT NOW! London is so much fun, and there are so many things I never got the chance to see. While I was visiting in January, I was fortunate enough to see the "Pop Art Portraits" exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery. Obviously, the exhibit had several works by Andy Warhol, which is fine and dandy, but I also got to see this Andy Warhol-esque screen print by Richard Hamilton:

"Swingeing London 67(a)": Portrait of Mick Jagger and art dealer Robert Fraser being arrested for illegal substance abuse.

This was one of my favorite portraits in the entire museum; in fact, a postcard of this is actually sitting on my desk at work. There are actually some other things sitting on that desk: a deer temporary tattoo, stickers of dogs, another post card of "Portrait of Juan Gris" by Patrick Caulfield, and the Periodic Table of Elements. Whoo, so exciting!

my new favorite toy

Now that I have lots of time on my hands, I figure I should spend more time doing my favorite hobby: COOKING! This obviously entails spending money on fancy kitchenware that I've always wanted. Several days after my preliminary exam, I went to my favorite local kitchenware store (Foster's for those that are interested) and got one of these babies:

a stove-top espresso maker FOR ONE! This has been the best $20+tax I've spent in a really long time. Plus, I finally can use the espresso coffee I accidentally bought in London. I'm so pleased; although the stove-top espresso maker doesn't make cafe-quality espresso shots, it beats the hell out of the gritty coffee that my IKEA French press spits out. The best part of this purchase is that now I can make my favorite dessert tiramisu. Mmmmm, I've expressed so many favorites in one entry.

Today is Philly's first hazy day of 2008! It's officially Spring when the sexy Penn undergrads start teasing me with their short shorts. Sadly, I'm a not-so-sexy Penn graduate student, who had the misfortune of wearing a polyester long-sleeve shirt in 70 degree weather. Oh well, screw scandalous clothing, I need a coral-red turban and matching lipstick!

A sweet romper and ~~long legs~~ yellow sunglasses would be nice, too.

I'm sure you've all come across this on other blogs, but seeing how this is also a blog, I figure I should follow suit. The photo above is from Ryan McGinley's new exhibit entitled "I Know Where the Summer Goes". Apparently, 50 images of the 150,000 photos that McGinley took in Summer 2007 are on display at Team Gallery (83 Grand Street; New York, NY 10013). Don't the photos looks AMAZING on McGinley's website?! Who wants to come with me to see this?

Speaking of holograms, I have a funny anecdote. In sixth grade, my teacher made my class write business letters to companies of our choice. I wrote to Kodak and told them I was wondering how they make holograms. A few weeks later, Kodak sent me this HUGE package with everything there is to know about making holograms. Even though my puny sixth-grade mind could not comprehend any of the information they sent me, I was amazed that someone actually took the time to respond to my letter. Sometimes I contemplate about writing fake sixth-grade business letters to get free stuff.

It's official: I've started a new chapter of my life. Since I will never have class work EVER AGAIN, I can blog my heart out. I know, I know.
